💡 Grammar Rule

Verbs of Motion: Carrying and Transporting in Russian

In Russian, verbs of motion are categorized into unidirectional (one-way) and multidirectional (round-trip, habitual, or aimless) pairs. When it comes to the idea of "taking," "carrying," or "transporting," three main pairs are essential.

1. нести / носить (nesti / nosit') — To carry on foot

This pair is used when someone is physically carrying an object while walking.

  • Unidirectional: Он несёт книгу в библиотеку. (On nesyot knigu v biblioteku — "He is taking the book to the library [on foot].")
  • Multidirectional: Она носила малютку по комнате. (Ona nosila malyutku po komnate — "She was carrying the baby up and down the room.")

2. вести / водить (vesti / vodit') — To lead or take

These verbs refer to leading a person or animal, or operating a vehicle.

  • Unidirectional: Она вела детей в школу. (Ona vela detey v shkolu — "She was taking the children to school [walking with them].")
  • Multidirectional: Она водила детей в цирк. (Ona vodila detey v tsirk — "She took the children to the circus [and back].")

3. везти / возить (vezti / vozit') — To transport by vehicle

Use these when someone or something is being moved by a form of transport (car, bus, stroller, etc.).

  • Unidirectional: Она везёт ребёнка в коляске. (Ona vezyot rebyonka v kolyaske — "She is wheeling the child in a stroller.")
  • Multidirectional: Автобус возит туристов по Англии. (Avtobus vozit turistov po Anglii — "The bus takes tourists round England.")

Key Distinctions

Purpose of the Journey: Unlike the general verb брать / взять (brat' / vzyat' — "to take"), these verbs of motion imply a specific destination or purpose. Compare: Ведите детей в зоосад (Vedite detey v zoosad — "Take the children to the zoo") suggests a deliberate trip, whereas Возьмите меня с собой (Voz'mite menya s soboy — "Take me with you") focuses more on the accompaniment than the movement itself.

Baggage vs. Purpose: If you are transporting a specific item for a purpose, use везти (e.g., Везу картину на выставку — "I am taking a painting to an exhibition"). However, if you are simply carrying personal items like a briefcase while traveling, нести is often used: Несу портфель (Nesu portfel' — "I am carrying a briefcase").

Translating "To Drive"

Russian specifies how "driving" occurs:

  • ехать / ездить (yekhat' / yezdit'): To drive or travel as a passenger or simply to be in the process of moving by vehicle. Я еду в город. (Ya yedu v gorod — "I am driving to town.")
  • везти / возить (vezti / vozit'): To drive in the sense of transporting something. Я вёз багаж на станцию. (Ya vyoz bagazh na stantsiyu — "I was taking the luggage to the station.")
  • вести / водить (vesti / vodit'): To drive in the sense of operating the vehicle. Я учусь водить машину. (Ya uchus' vodit' mashinu — "I am learning to drive a car.")
  • гнать / гонять (gnat' / gonyat'): To drive animals (to herd). гнать стадо (gnat' stado — "to drive a herd.")
