Second-Conjugation Verbs in Russian

In Russian, verbs are categorized into two main conjugation patterns. The Second Conjugation is primarily characterized by the vowel и in the endings. These verbs take the following present-future endings:

  • я (I): -ю or -у
  • ты (you, sing.): -ишь
  • он/она/оно (he/she/it): -ит
  • мы (we): -им
  • вы (you, pl./formal): -ите
  • они (they): -ят or -ат

The stems of these verbs typically end in a consonant. However, there are a few exceptions where the stem might appear to end differently, such as бояться (boyátʹsya, “to fear”), стоить (stóitʹ, “to cost”), стоять (stoyátʹ, “to stand”), and строить (stróitʹ, “to build”).

Categories of Second-Conjugation Verbs

1. Verbs ending in -ить

Most verbs ending in -ить belong to this group (except for certain monosyllabic verbs like побить). For example:

говорить (govorítʹ, “to speak”):
я говорю́ (ya govoryú, “I speak”), ты говори́шь (ty govoríshʹ, “you speak”), он говори́т (on govorít, “he speaks”), мы говори́м (my govorím, “we speak”), вы говори́те (vy govoríte, “you speak”), они говоря́т (oní govoryát, “they speak”).

2. Verbs ending in -еть

Many verbs in -еть, particularly those related to sound or perception, follow this conjugation. Examples include:

  • смотреть (smotrétʹ, “to look”): смотрю́, смо́тришь, смо́трит, смо́трим, смо́трите, смо́трят (smotryú, smótrishʹ, etc.)
  • видеть (vídetʹ, “to see”): ви́жу, ви́дишь (vízhu, vídishʹ)
  • вертеть (vertétʹ, “to spin”): верчу́, ве́ртишь (verchú, vértishʹ)
  • греметь (gremétʹ, “to thunder”): гремлю́, греми́шь (gremlyú, gremíshʹ)
  • звенеть (zvenétʹ, “to ring”): звеню́, звени́шь (zvenyú, zveníshʹ)
  • сидеть (sidétʹ, “to sit”): сижу́, сиди́шь (sizhu, sidíshʹ)
  • скрипеть (skripétʹ, “to creak”): скриплю́, скрипи́шь (skriplyú, skripíshʹ)
  • терпеть (terpétʹ, “to endure”): терплю́, те́рпишь (terplyú, térpishʹ)
  • храпеть (khrapétʹ, “to snore”): храплю́, храпи́шь (khraplyú, khrapíshʹ)
  • шипеть (shipétʹ, “to hiss”): шиплю́, шипи́шь (shiplyú, shipíshʹ)

3. Verbs ending in -ать

Certain verbs in -ать, often associated with sound and usually having stems ending in ж, ч, ш, щ, are second-conjugation. Examples include:

  • кричать (krichátʹ, “to shout”): кричу́, кричи́шь (krichú, krichíshʹ)
  • молчать (molchátʹ, “to be silent”): молчу́, молчи́шь (molchú, molchíshʹ)
  • дышать (dyshátʹ, “to breathe”): дышу́, ды́шишь (dyshú, dýshishʹ)
  • лежать (lezhátʹ, “to lie”): лежу́, лежи́шь (lezhú, lezhíshʹ)
  • слышать (slyshátʹ, “to hear”): слышу́, слы́шишь (slyshú, slýshishʹ)
  • стучать (stuchátʹ, “to knock”): стучу́, стучи́шь (stuchú, stuchíshʹ)
  • Others: жужжать (zhuzhzhátʹ, “to buzz”), дрожать (drozhátʹ, “to tremble”), трещать (treshchátʹ, “to crackle”).

4. Verbs ending in -ять

A few notable verbs in -ять belong here:

  • стоять (stoyátʹ, “to stand”): стою́, стои́шь, стои́т, стои́м, стои́те, стоя́т (stoyú, stoíshʹ, etc.)
  • бояться (boyátʹsya, “to fear”): бою́сь, бои́шься, бои́тся, бои́мся, бои́тесь, боя́тся (boyúsʹ, boíshʹsya, etc.)

Important Spelling Rules

Russian spelling rules dictate changes after sibilant consonants (ж, ч, ш, щ):

  • In the 1st person singular (я), the ending is written as -у instead of -ю (e.g., кричу́).
  • In the 3rd person plural (они), the ending is written as -ат instead of -ят (e.g., крича́т vs. говоря́т).
