Stress Patterns in the Russian Second Conjugation

In Russian, verbs of the second conjugation (mostly those ending in -ить, but also some in -еть and -ать) follow specific stress patterns. Understanding where the stress falls is crucial for correct pronunciation and natural-sounding speech.

1. Fixed Stem Stress

If the infinitive (the dictionary form) has the stress on the stem, the stress usually remains on that same syllable throughout all forms of the present tense. It does not move.

Example: ве́рить (véritʹ) — "to believe"

  • я ве́рю (ya véryu) — I believe
  • ты ве́ришь (ty vérishʹ) — you believe
  • он/она́/оно́ ве́рит (on/oná/onó vérit) — he/she/it believes
  • мы ве́рим (my vérim) — we believe
  • вы ве́рите (vy vérite) — you (plural/formal) believe
  • они́ ве́рят (oní véryat) — they believe

2. The Stress Shift Pattern (Mobile Stress)

Many verbs that have the stress on the ending in the infinitive undergo a "shift." The stress stays on the ending for the 1st person singular (я), but then moves back to the stem for all other forms.

Example: кури́ть (kurítʹ) — "to smoke"

  • я курю́ (ya kuryú) — I smoke (End stress)
  • ты ку́ришь (ty kúrishʹ) — you smoke (Stem stress)
  • он/она́ ку́рит (on/oná kúrit) — he/she smokes (Stem stress)
  • они́ ку́рят (oní kúryat) — they smoke (Stem stress)

Common verbs following this shift include:

  • вари́ть (varítʹ) "to boil" → я варю́ (ya varyú), ты ва́ришь (ty várishʹ)
  • смотре́ть (smotrétʹ) "to look" → я смотрю́ (ya smotryú), ты смо́тришь (ty smótrishʹ)
  • держа́ть (derzhátʹ) "to hold" → я держу́ (ya derzhú), ты де́ржишь (ty dérzhishʹ)

3. Common Stress-Shifting Verbs with Consonant Mutations

Often, these stress-shifting verbs also change their middle consonant in the 1st person singular (я). Despite the consonant change, the stress pattern remains: я-form (end) vs. others (stem).

  • ходи́ть (khodítʹ) "to walk": я хожу́ (ya khozhú) → ты хо́дишь (ty khódishʹ)
  • люби́ть (lyubítʹ) "to love": я люблю́ (ya lyublyú) → ты лю́бишь (ty lyúbishʹ)
  • плати́ть (platítʹ) "to pay": я плачу́ (ya plachú) → ты пла́тишь (ty plátishʹ)
  • проси́ть (prosítʹ) "to request": я прошу́ (ya proshú) → ты про́сишь (ty prósishʹ)
  • буди́ть (budítʹ) "to wake": я бужу́ (ya buzhú) → ты бу́дишь (ty búdishʹ)

4. Notable Exceptions and Variations

While the shift is common, it is not universal. Some end-stressed infinitives keep the stress on the ending throughout:

  • коси́ть (kosítʹ) "to mow/squint": я кошу́ (ya koshú), ты коси́шь (ty kosíshʹ).

Some verbs even allow alternative stress, where both patterns are considered acceptable in modern Russian:

  • дои́ть (doítʹ) "to milk": я дою́ (ya doyú) or я до́ю (ya dóyu).
  • кружи́ть (kruzhítʹ) "to spin/circle": он кружи́т (on kruzhít) or он кру́жит (on krúzhit).
Summary Rule: If the infinitive is end-stressed, check the 2nd person (ты). If the stress moves back to the stem there, it will stay on the stem for all forms except "я".
