Russian Nominative Plural: A Quick Guide

Forming plurals in Russian depends on the gender of the noun (Masculine, Feminine, or Neuter) and the "Spelling Rule." Here is a breakdown of the most common patterns.

1. Masculine Nouns (Мужской род)

Most masculine nouns add -ы. However, if the word ends in a soft consonant or falls under the spelling rule, use -и.

  • Hard ending: стол (stol - table) → столы (stoly - tables)
  • Soft ending: музей (muzey - museum) → музеи (muzei - museums)
  • Spelling Rule: Use -и after letters like к, г, х, ш, щ, ч, ж.
парк (park - park) → парки (parki - parks)

2. Feminine Nouns (Женский род)

Feminine nouns ending in -а usually change to -ы. If they end in -я or -ь (soft sign), they change to -и.

  • Ending in -а: газета (gazeta - newspaper) → газеты (gazety - newspapers)
  • Ending in -я: песня (pesnya - song) → песни (pesni - songs)
  • Ending in -ь: ночь (noch’ - night) → ночи (nochi - nights)
  • Spelling Rule: Use -и if the stem ends in к, г, х, ш, щ, ч, ж.
книга (kniga - book) → книги (knigi - books)

3. Neuter Nouns (Средний род)

Neuter nouns are different: -о becomes -а, and -е becomes -я. Note that the stress often shifts in neuter plurals!

  • Ending in -о: окно (okno - window) → окна (okna - windows)
  • Ending in -е: море (more - sea) → моря (morya - seas)

Important Exceptions

Some very common masculine nouns use -а (stressed) instead of -ы:

  • дом (dom - house) → дома (doma - houses)
  • город (gorod - city) → города (goroda - cities)
