First-Conjugation Verbs with Consonant Stems
In Russian, most verbs end in -ть. However, a specific group of first-conjugation verbs ends in -ти, -сть/-зть, or -чь. These are known as "consonant stem" verbs because their true stem ends in a consonant that is often hidden in the infinitive but "resurfaces" or changes during conjugation.
1. Verbs ending in -ти
These verbs are always stressed on the ending. The stem consonant appears clearly in the 1st person singular (я) and 3rd person plural (они) forms. They are grouped by their final stem consonant:
- B-stems: грести (grestí, "to row") → я гребу, они гребут (ya grebú, oní grebút). Similarly: скрести (skrestí, "to scrape") → я скребу (ya skrebú).
- D-stems: вести (vestí, "to lead") → я веду, они ведут (ya vedú, oní vedút). Also: блюсти (blyustí, "to observe"), брести (brestí, "to wander").
- T-stems: мести (mestí, "to sweep") → я мету, они метут (ya metú, oní metút). Also: плести (plestí, "to braid"), цвести (tsvestí, "to flower"), обрести (obrestí, "to acquire").
- S-stems: нести (nestí, "to carry") → я несу, они несут (ya nesú, oní nesút). Also: пасти (pastí, "to graze"), трясти (tryastí, "to shake").
- Z-stems: везти (veztí, "to convey/drive") → я везу, они везут (ya vezú, oní vezút). Also: ползти (polztí, "to crawl").
- Irregular: идти (idtí, "to go") → я иду, они идут (idú, idút).
2. Verbs ending in -сть and -зть
These verbs look like standard -ть verbs but behave like consonant stems. The stem consonant (usually д, т, з, or с) reappears in the present tense.
- D-stems: класть (klast', "to place/put") → я кладу, ты кладёшь (ya kladú, ty kladyósh'). Also: красть (krast', "to steal"), пасть (past', "to fall").
- Z-stems: лезть (lezt', "to climb") → я лезу, ты лезешь (ya lézu, ty lézesh'). Note that лезть has a fixed stem stress. Also: грызть (gryzt', "to gnaw") → я грызу (ya gryzú).
- N-stems: клясть (klyast', "to curse") → я кляну, ты клянёшь (ya klyanú, ty klyanyósh').
- Special cases: сесть (sest', "to sit down") → я сяду, ты сядешь (ya syádu, ty syádesh').
3. Verbs ending in -чь
These verbs have stems ending in back-of-the-throat consonants г (g) or к (k). They follow a specific "mutation" pattern: the original consonant appears in the 1st person singular and 3rd person plural, but changes in the middle forms.
- G-stems (г → ж): беречь (berech', "to look after") → я берегу (g), ты бережёшь (zh), они берегут (g). Other examples: мочь (moch', "to be able") → я могу, ты можешь; лечь (lech', "to lie down") → я лягу, ты ляжешь; стричь (strich', "to cut hair") → я стригу, ты стрижёшь.
- K-stems (к → ч): печь (pech', "to bake") → я пеку (k), ты печёшь (ch), они пекут (k). Other examples: течь (tech', "to flow") → течёт, текут; влечь (vlech', "to draw/attract") → я влеку, ты влечёшь.
A modern variation is seen in достичь (dostích', "to achieve"). It can appear as достичь or достигнуть, but both use the same conjugation: я достигну, ты достигнешь (ya dostígnu, ty dostígnesh').
