Russian First-Conjugation Verbs with Consonant Stems

In Russian, first-conjugation verbs often exhibit specific changes when moving from the infinitive form to the present or future tense. These verbs are characterized by "consonant stems," where the stem used for conjugation ends in a consonant and may involve vowel shifts or consonant insertions.

1. Direct Consonant Stems (Infinitive in -ать and -нуть)

Many verbs in -ать have a present stem that matches the infinitive stem without the suffix. Note that unlike some other verbs, these do not undergo consonant mutations (like g to zh).

  • ждать (zhdatʹ, “to wait”): я жду (ya zhdu), ты ждёшь (ty zhdyoshʹ), он ждёт (on zhdyot), мы ждём (my zhdyom), вы ждёте (vy zhdyote), они ждут (oni zhdut)
  • врать (vratʹ, “to lie”): я вру (ya vru), ты врёшь (ty vryoshʹ)
  • жаждать (zhazhdatʹ, “to thirst for”): я жажду (ya zhazhdu), ты жаждешь (ty zhazhdeshʹ)
  • орать (oratʹ, “to yell”): я ору (ya oru), ты орёшь (ty oryoshʹ)
  • ткать (tkatʹ, “to weave”): я тку (ya tku), ты ткёшь (ty tkyoshʹ) — Note: No mutation occurs here, unlike лгать (lgatʹ, “to lie”) → лгу, лжёшь.

Verbs ending in -нуть follow a similar predictable pattern:

  • гнуть (gnutʹ, “to bend”): я гну (ya gnu), ты гнёшь (ty gnyoshʹ)
  • мёрзнуть (myorznutʹ, “to freeze”): я мёрзну (ya myorznu), ты мёрзнешь (ty myorzneshʹ)

2. Verbs in -оть

Verbs ending in -оть usually change the о to a soft sign or a soft vowel sound in the conjugation stem.

  • колоть (kolotʹ, “to chop/prick”): я колю (ya kolyu), ты колешь (ty koleshʹ), они колют (oni kolyut)
  • бороться (borotʹsya, “to struggle/fight”): я борюсь (ya boryusʹ), ты борешься (ty boreshʹsya)
  • молоть (molotʹ, “to grind”): я мелю (ya melyu), ты мелешь (ty meleshʹ) — Note the vowel change to "е".

3. Mobile Vowels and Vowel Shifts

In some verbs, a vowel appears in the conjugated form that is not present in the infinitive (or vice versa).

  • брать (bratʹ, “to take”): я беру (ya beru), ты берёшь (ty beryoshʹ)
  • звать (zvatʹ, “to call”): я зову (ya zovu), ты зовёшь (ty zovyoshʹ)
  • тереть (teretʹ, “to rub”): я тру (ya tru), ты трёшь (ty tryoshʹ) — Here, the vowel is lost in conjugation.
  • стелить (stelitʹ, “to spread/pave”): я стелю (ya stelyu), ты стелешь (ty stelyeshʹ)

4. Consonant Insertions (-в-, -д-, -м-, -н-)

Some of the most common Russian verbs insert a consonant into the stem during conjugation.

  • Insertion of -в-: жить (zhitʹ, “to live”) → живу (zhivu); плыть (plytʹ, “to swim”) → плыву (plyvu).
  • Insertion of -д-: быть (bytʹ, “to be”) → буду (budu); ехать (yekhatʹ, “to travel”) → еду (yedu).
  • Insertion of -м- or -н-:
    • взять (vzyatʹ, “to take”): возьму (vozʹmu), возьмёшь (vozʹmyoshʹ)
    • начать (nachatʹ, “to begin”): начну (nachnu), начнёшь (nachnyoshʹ)
    • понять (ponyatʹ, “to understand”): пойму (poymu), поймёшь (poymyoshʹ)
    • снять (snyatʹ, “to take off/remove”): сниму (snimu), снимешь (snimeshʹ)
    • стать (statʹ, “to become”): стану (stanu), станешь (staneshʹ)

Note: Compounds of -нять follow specific rules: if the prefix ends in a vowel (like по-), it conjugates like понять (пойму); if the prefix ends in a consonant (like с-), it conjugates like снять (сниму).

5. Irregular Patterns

A few verbs follow unique or shifting patterns that must be memorized:

  • ошибиться (oshibitʹsya, “to err/make a mistake”): я ошибусь (ya oshibusʹ), ты ошибёшься (ya oshibyoshʹsya)
