Italian Grammar: The Progressive Tense (stare + gerundio)

In Italian, the progressive tense is used to describe an action that is happening right now or to emphasize its continuous nature. While it looks very similar to English, it is used more selectively.

1. How to Form the Progressive Tense

To create this tense, you need two parts: the verb stare (to be/to stay) conjugated in the present tense, followed by the gerundio (gerund) of the main verb.

Conjugating "stare":

  • io sto
  • tu stai
  • lui/lei sta
  • noi stiamo
  • voi state
  • loro stanno

Forming the Gerundio:

  • Verbs ending in -are change to -ando (e.g., parlare → parlando).
  • Verbs ending in -ere and -ire change to -endo (e.g., leggere → leggendo, dormire → dormendo).

Example: Sto mangiando (I am eating).

2. Usage and Nuance

The progressive tense is used for actions in progress at the exact moment of speaking or to highlight a temporary, ongoing activity.

Che cosa stai facendo? (What are you doing? [right now])

Sto studiando per l'esame. (I am studying for the exam.)

3. Frequency: Italian vs. English

Unlike English, where the "to be + -ing" form is almost mandatory for current actions, Italian often prefers the Simple Present (Presente Indicativo). In many cases, saying "Studio" is more natural than "Sto studiando" even if you are holding the book in your hand.

The stare + gerundio construction is more emphatic. It is used when you want to stress that the action is currently unfolding, perhaps as an explanation for why you cannot do something else or to highlight an interruption.

Non posso uscire, sto lavorando! (I can't go out, I am working! [emphasizing the ongoing task])
