In Italian, interrogative adverbs are essential tools used to ask questions about the circumstances of an action, such as the manner, place, time, reason, or quantity. They are generally placed at the beginning of the sentence.
Come is used to ask about the way something is done, a person's state, or for evaluations.
Dove is used to ask about a location or a destination.
Quando asks about the time or the moment an event occurs.
Perché is the standard way to ask "why." To express surprise or a specific expectation, Italians often use the expression come mai (how come).
Quanto refers to quantity, degree, or size. Unlike the others, when quanto functions as an adjective, it must agree in gender and number with the noun it modifies.
When these adverbs (except perché) precede a form of the verb essere starting with a vowel (like è), they are usually shortened using an apostrophe.
