Italian Demonstrative Adjectives and the Adjective "Bello"

In Italian, demonstrative adjectives point out specific objects or people in relation to the speaker. The two most common are questo (this) and quello (that).

1. Using "Questo" (This)

The adjective questo is straightforward. It precedes the noun and agrees with it in gender and number:

  • questo ragazzo (this boy) - Masculine Singular
  • questa ragazza (this girl) - Feminine Singular
  • questi ragazzi (these boys) - Masculine Plural
  • queste ragazze (these girls) - Feminine Plural

2. Using "Quello" (That)

When quello comes before a noun, it functions differently. It changes its form based on the first letter of the following word, exactly like the definite articles (il, lo, l', i, gli, le):

  • quel film (that movie) - Like il; used before most consonants.
  • quello spettacolo (that show) - Like lo; used before s + consonant, z, ps, gn.
  • quellโ€™esempio (that example) - Like l'; used before vowels.
  • quei libri (those books) - Like i; masculine plural before most consonants.
  • quegli amici (those friends) - Like gli; masculine plural before vowels or s + consonant.
  • quelle ragazze (those girls) - Like le; feminine plural.

3. The Adjective "Bello" (Beautiful/Handsome)

The adjective bello behaves in two different ways depending on its position:

Before the Noun: It follows the same phonetic patterns as quello and the definite articles:

  • un bel film (a nice movie)
  • un bello zaino (a nice backpack)
  • un bellโ€™uomo (a handsome man)
  • bei fiori (beautiful flowers)
  • begli esempi (nice examples)
  • belle foto (beautiful photos)

After the Noun or Verb: It uses the standard regular forms (bello, bella, belli, belle):
