Stato in Luogo: Expressing Location in Italian
The stato in luogo (state in place) complement describes where someone or something is located or where an action happens. It indicates a stationary position, whether real or figurative.
1. Prepositions with Proper Names
The choice of preposition depends on the size of the location:
- A: Used for cities, towns, and small islands.
- Studio a Valladolid. (I study in Valladolid.)
- Vivo a Roma. (I live in Rome.)
- In: Used for large areas like countries, regions, continents, and large islands.
- Abito in Colombia. (I live in Colombia.)
- Siamo in Toscana. (We are in Tuscany.)
2. Common Nouns and Idiomatic Expressions
With common nouns, the preposition is often idiomatic and fixed. Some use "a," while others use "in," sometimes without an article.
- Resto a casa. (I'm staying at home.)
- Il cuoco Γ¨ in cucina. (The chef is in the kitchen.)
- Sono a scuola. (I am at school.)
- Lavoriamo in ufficio. (We work in the office.)
3. Being at Someone's Place
When the location is a person's home or workplace, use the preposition da.
- Abito dai genitori. (I live at my parents' place.)
- Fermati da me stasera. (Stay at my place tonight.)
4. Precision: Surfaces and Adverbs
Italian is very precise about spatial positioning:
- Su: Used for something resting on a surface.
- Il libro Γ¨ sul tavolo. (The book is on the table.)
- Improper Prepositions: Adverbs like dentro (inside), sotto (under), sopra (above), and dietro (behind) can function as prepositions. Note: Use di before a personal pronoun.
- Il gatto Γ¨ sotto il letto. (The cat is under the bed.)
- C'Γ¨ molta forza dentro di me. (There is a lot of strength inside of me.)
5. Locutions and Intermediate Positions
For fine-grained descriptions, Italian uses prepositional phrases or tra/fra:
- La sedia Γ¨ accanto al tavolo. (The chair is next to the table.)
- Abito vicino a Milano. (I live near Milan.)
- La farmacia Γ¨ di fronte alla banca. (The pharmacy is across from the bank.)
- Il telecomando Γ¨ tra i cuscini. (The remote is between the cushions.)
