The Modal Verbs in Italian: Potere, Volere, Dovere, and Sapere

In Italian, modal verbs (also known as "verbi servili") are essential tools used to express the mood or intention of an action. They are followed directly by another verb in the infinitive form, without using any prepositions.

1. Potere (To be able to / Can / May)

Potere is used to express possibility, permission, or physical ability.

  • Posso uscire? (May I go out?)
  • Puoi venire alla festa? (Can you come to the party?)
  • Non possiamo entrare. (We cannot enter.)

2. Volere (To want / To wish)

Volere expresses a desire, a strong intention, or willingness to do something.

  • Voglio mangiare una pizza. (I want to eat a pizza.)
  • Vogliamo partire domani. (We want to leave tomorrow.)
  • Vuole parlare con te. (He/She wants to speak with you.)

3. Dovere (Must / Have to / Should)

Dovere indicates obligation, necessity, or a logical conclusion.

  • Devo studiare per l'esame. (I have to study for the exam.)
  • Dobbiamo finire questo lavoro. (We must finish this work.)
  • Deve essere stanco. (He must be tired.)

4. Sapere (To know how to)

When followed by an infinitive, Sapere means "to know how to" or "to have the skill to." It differs from potere because it implies a learned ability rather than just opportunity or permission.

  • So guidare la macchina. (I know how to drive the car.)
  • Sai nuotare? (Do you know how to swim?)
  • Non sanno cucinare. (They don't know how to cook.)

Conjugation in the Present Indicative

These four verbs are irregular. Here are their forms:

  • Potere: io posso, tu puoi, lui/lei puรฒ, noi possiamo, voi potete, loro possono
  • Volere: io voglio, tu vuoi, lui/lei vuole, noi vogliamo, voi volete, loro vogliono
  • Dovere: io devo, tu devi, lui/lei deve, noi dobbiamo, voi dovete, loro devono
  • Sapere: io so, tu sai, lui/lei sa, noi sappiamo, voi sapete, loro sanno

Note: In these constructions, the subject of the modal verb is the same as the subject of the infinitive. If used alone without an infinitive, they still retain their general meaning (e.g., Ti devo dei soldi - I owe you money).
