Irregular Imperatives in Italian
In Italian, while many verbs follow standard patterns in the imperative mood, several high-frequency verbs have irregular forms. These are essential for giving commands, advice, or making requests.
1. Fully Irregular: Essere and Avere
The verbs essere (to be) and avere (to have) are completely irregular and must be memorized as fixed paradigms.
- Essere: sii (tu), sia (Lei), siamo (noi), siate (voi), siano (Loro)
Example: Sii gentile! (Be kind!)
Example: Sia pronta per le 10, Signora. (Be ready by 10:00, Ma'am.)
- Avere: abbi (tu), abbia (Lei), abbiamo (noi), abbiate (voi), abbiano (Loro)
Example: Abbi pazienza! (Have patience!)
2. Monosyllabic Forms (The Apostrophe Rule)
Five very common verbs have a shortened, monosyllabic form in the second person singular (tu). This form often takes an apostrophe.
- Andare (to go): vaโ (tu), vada (Lei), andiamo (noi), andate (voi), vadano (Loro)
Example: Vaโ subito qui! (Go there immediately!)
- Dare (to give): daโ (tu), dia (Lei), diamo (noi), date (voi), diano (Loro)
