Pronominal Verbs in French (La forme pronominale)

Pronominal verbs are verbs that are accompanied by a reflexive pronoun (me, te, se, nous, vous, se). These pronouns reflect the action back onto the subject. In English, we often translate these using "myself," "yourself," etc., or sometimes the reflexive meaning is just implied.

1. Formation in the Present Tense

To conjugate a pronominal verb, you place the correct reflexive pronoun between the subject and the conjugated verb. If the verb starts with a vowel or a silent 'h', me, te, and se become m', t', and s'.

  • Je me (I ... myself)
  • Tu te (You ... yourself)
  • Il/Elle/On se (He/She/One ... himself/herself/itself)
  • Nous nous (We ... ourselves)
  • Vous vous (You ... yourself/yourselves)
  • Ils/Elles se (They ... themselves)

Example: Se laver (To wash oneself)

  • Je me lave (I wash myself)
  • Tu te laves (You wash yourself)
  • Il se lave (He washes himself)
  • Nous nous lavons (We wash ourselves)
  • Vous vous lavez (You wash yourselves)
  • Ils se lavent (They wash themselves)

2. Types of Pronominal Verbs

Reflexive (Sens réfléchi): The subject performs the action on themselves.

Example: Je me lave les mains. (I wash my hands.)

Reciprocal (Sens réciproque): Multiple subjects perform the action on each other.

Example: Nous nous téléphonons. (We call each other.)

Passive (Sens passif): The subject undergoes the action (common with inanimate objects).

Example: Ce plat se prépare en cinq minutes. (This dish is prepared in five minutes.)

Essentially Pronominal: Verbs that only exist in this form.

Example: Je me souviens de toi. (I remember you.)

3. Special Cases

The Infinitive: Even when the verb is in the infinitive (not conjugated), the pronoun must still match the subject.

Example: Vous devez vous préparer. (You must prepare yourselves.)

Meaning Change: Some verbs change meaning when they become pronominal.

Example: Rendre (To give back) vs. Se rendre à (To go to a place).
