💡 Grammar Rule

French Object Pronouns (Les pronoms compléments)

In French, object pronouns are used to replace nouns and avoid repetition. A key rule to remember is that these pronouns are generally placed before the verb in all tenses and moods, except for the affirmative imperative (commands).

1. Direct Object Pronouns: Le, La, Les vs. En

The choice between le, la, les and en depends on whether the noun is definite or indefinite.

Le, La, Les (Definite)

These pronouns replace specific nouns introduced by a definite article (le, la, l', les), a possessive adjective (mon, sa, notre, etc.), or a demonstrative adjective (ce, cette, ces).

  • Nous vendrons notre maison. → Nous la vendrons. (We will sell it.)
  • J’ai vu ces films. → Je les ai vus. (I saw them.)

Note: When using le, la, or les with the passé composé, the past participle must agree in gender and number with the pronoun (e.g., les photos que j’ai vues).

En (Indefinite or Quantity)

The pronoun en replaces a noun introduced by a partitive article (du, de la, de l’), an indefinite article (un, une, des), or an expression of quantity.

  • Je veux du thé. → J’en veux bien. (I would like some.)
  • Tu as des amis français ? → Oui, j’en ai. (Yes, I have some.)
  • Ils ont trois enfants. → Ils en ont trois. (They have three of them.)

In negative sentences, en is still used, but the noun is not repeated: Je n’en ai pas (I don't have any). En is also used in impersonal constructions like il y a or il reste: Il reste une caisse. → Il en reste une. (One box remains / There is one left.)

2. Indirect Object Pronouns: Lui and Leur

The pronouns lui (singular) and leur (plural) are used for the third person when the verb is followed by the preposition à (usually referring to people).

  • J’ai écrit à Lucie. → Je lui ai écrit. (I wrote to her.)
  • On a annoncé la nouvelle aux passagers. → On leur a annoncé. (We announced the news to them.)

3. First and Second Person Pronouns

The pronouns me, te, nous, and vous can function as either direct or indirect objects. They shorten to m’ and t’ before a vowel or silent H.

  • Il me reconnaît. (He recognizes me.)
  • Elle nous aidera. (She will help us.)
  • Il te téléphone. (He is calling you.)

4. The Special Case: à + Tonic Pronoun

With certain verbs—specifically pronominal verbs or verbs expressing attention, attachment, or thought—you cannot use lui or leur. Instead, you must use à + a tonic pronoun (moi, toi, lui, elle, nous, vous, eux, elles).

  • s'adresser à: Il s'adresse à elle. (He addresses her.)
  • penser à: Je pense à lui. (I am thinking of him.)
  • faire attention à: Faites attention à eux. (Pay attention to them.)
  • être à: Ce parapluie est à toi. (This umbrella is yours.)
