The French Imperative: Special Forms

The imperative mood is used to give orders, advice, or make requests. While most French verbs follow regular patterns in the imperative, some very common verbs have unique, irregular forms that you must memorize.

1. Key Irregular Verbs

Three essential verbs use forms derived from the subjunctive rather than the present indicative:

  • Avoir (To have):
    • Aie ! (Have! - singular)
    • Ayons ! (Let's have!)
    • Ayez ! (Have! - plural/formal)
    • Ex: Aie du courage ! (Have courage!)
  • Être (To be):
    • Sois ! (Be! - singular)
    • Soyons ! (Let's be!)
    • Soyez ! (Be! - plural/formal)
    • Ex: Soyez prudents ! (Be careful!)
  • Savoir (To know):
    • Sache ! (Know! - singular)
    • Sachons ! (Let's know!)
    • Sachez ! (Know! - plural/formal)
    • Ex: Sachez la vérité. (Know the truth.)

2. The Case of "Aller"

The verb aller (to go) is irregular in the tu form. Instead of vas, we drop the 's':

  • Va ! (Go!)
  • Allons ! (Let's go!)
  • Allez ! (Go!)
  • Ex: Va à l'école ! (Go to school!)

3. Other Verbs with Irregular Imperative Tendencies

Many other common verbs also exhibit irregular imperative forms (often mirroring their present or subjunctive stems). These include: faire (fais, faisons, faites), vouloir (veuille, veuillons, veuillez), dire, prendre, pouvoir, venir, voir, mettre, devoir, and croire.

4. Important Rule: Hyphens

When using an affirmative imperative with a pronoun, a hyphen is always required between the verb and the pronoun.
