Definite Articles in French (Les articles définis)
The definite article is used to refer to a specific noun or to make general statements. In English, this corresponds to the word "the".
1. Basic Forms
Unlike English, French articles must match the gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural) of the noun they accompany.
- le: Masculine singular (e.g., le livre [the book])
- la: Feminine singular (e.g., la table [the table])
- les: Plural for both genders (e.g., les livres [the books], les tables [the tables])
2. Elision (l')
When le or la precedes a word beginning with a vowel or a silent h, they shorten to l'. This is known as elision.
- l’arbre (the tree)
- l’eau (the water)
- l’homme (the man - silent h)
3. The Aspirated "H" (H aspiré)
In some words, the initial h acts like a consonant. In these cases, elision does not occur and liaison is blocked. You must use the full form of the article.
- le héros (the hero)
- le haricot (the bean)
- la haine (the hatred)
- la Hongrie (Hungary)
- le hasard (the chance/fate)
4. Contracted Articles
Definite articles contract when they follow the prepositions à (to/at) or de (of/from). Note that la and l' do not contract.
- à + le = au: Nous allons au cinéma (We are going to the movie theater)
- à + les = aux: Le professeur parle aux élèves (The teacher speaks to the students)
- de + le = du: La table du salon (The living room table)
- de + les = des: Les feuilles des arbres (The leaves of the trees)
5. Main Uses
Definite articles are used in many contexts, including some where English might omit them:
- Unique or known things: Le Soleil éclaire la Terre (The Sun lights up the Earth).
- General values/concepts: L’argent ne fait pas le bonheur (Money does not buy happiness).
- Geographical names: l’Europe (Europe), le Canada (Canada).
- Languages and peoples: le chinois (Chinese), les Italiens (the Italians).
- Dates, seasons, and days: le 15 mai (May 15th), l’hiver (winter). Note: le lundi expresses a habit (e.g., Je joue au football le lundi [I play soccer on Mondays]).
- Superlatives: le monument le plus célèbre (the most famous monument).
- Titles: le Président (the President), la reine (the queen).
- Measurement: 3 euros le kilo (3 dollars a kilo).
6. Restrictions and Exceptions
- Months: No article is used (e.g., en septembre [in September]).
- Certain countries: Cuba, Israël do not take articles.
- Fixed expressions: aller à l’école (to go to school), être à la maison (to be at home).
