uses of 'the'

πŸ’‘ Grammar Rule

Using β€œthe” in Special Situations (English Explanation)

1. β€œThe” for things that exist only once

We use the when there is only one of something or it is unique in context.

Examples:

  • the equator
  • the capital
  • the tenth floor

2. β€œThe” with superlatives

We always use the with superlative adjectives.

Example: the longest river.

3. β€œThe” when the listener knows what we mean

Use the when it is clear which specific thing you are talking about, even if it is the first mention.

  • The sun is a star (there is only one sun for us).
  • The hotel we stayed at was very old (the listener knows which hotel).

Contrast this with a/an, which introduces something non-specific.

4. Fixed phrases with β€œthe”

Some expressions always take the:

  • the same
  • the world
  • the universe
  • the sky
  • the sea
  • the ground
  • the country

5. β€œEarth” with or without β€œthe”

We say Earth (no article) when using it as a planet name: Earth is the third planet from the sun.

We say the Earth when talking about it as the place we live on: People have lived on the Earth for thousands of years.

6. β€œSpace” vs. β€œthe space”

Space (no article) means outer space: They traveled into space.

The space means a particular area: The space in the closet is too small.

7. β€œThe cinema / the theatre”

We use the with certain public entertainment places: go to the cinema, go to the theatre.

8. TV, radio, internet

  • We usually say TV/television without the: I watch TV every night.
  • But we say the radio: I listen to the radio.
  • And the internet: I found it on the internet.

9. Meals

We normally do not use the before meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

But we add an article when describing them: a big lunch, the delicious dinner.

10. Numbers and labels

We usually omit the before labels such as:

  • size 43
  • platform 5
  • room 126
  • page 29
  • vitamin A
  • section B

11. Places: school, prison, hospital, etc.

We omit the when talking about the place in its general purpose (the usual activity there):

  • go to school / be at school = as a student (education).
  • go to prison / be in prison = as a prisoner.
  • go to hospital / be in hospital = as a patient (common in British English; in American English, β€œthe hospital” is more common even for patients, but both forms are understood).
  • go to university / go to college = as a student.
  • go to church / be in church = as a worshipper.

Use the when you refer to the specific building for another purpose:

  • go to the school to pick up my child
  • go to the prison to visit someone
  • go to the hospital to see a patient

12. Bed, work, home

  • go to bed / be in bed (for sleeping)
