German Possessive Determiners

Possessive determiners in German are words like "my," "your," or "his" that come before a noun. They tell us who something belongs to. In German, these words are special because they change their endings depending on the gender (masculine, feminine, neuter), number (singular, plural), and case (nominative, accusative, etc.) of the noun that follows them.

1. The Base Forms (The Stems)

First, you must choose the correct base word based on the owner:

  • ich (I) → mein (my)
  • du (you) → dein (your - informal)
  • er / es (he / it) → sein (his / its)
  • sie (she) → ihr (her)
  • wir (we) → unser (our)
  • ihr (you all) → euer (your - plural informal)
  • sie / Sie (they / You) → ihr / Ihr (their / your - formal)

2. How to Add Endings

Possessive determiners follow the same ending pattern as the indefinite article (ein). This means that in the Nominative case, masculine and neuter nouns usually have no ending, while feminine and plural nouns add an -e.

3. Case Examples

Watch how the ending changes based on the noun's role in the sentence:

  • Nominative (Subject): Mein Vater ist hier. (My father is here.)
  • Accusative (Direct Object): Ich liebe meine Mutter. (I love my mother.)
  • Dative (Indirect Object/Prepositions): Ich spreche mit meinem Freund. (I am speaking with my friend.)
  • Genitive (Possession): Das Auto meines Bruders. (The car of my brother / My brother's car.)

4. Special Stems: unser and euer

The words unser and euer already end in "-er". When you add an ending that starts with a vowel (like -e, -em, -er), the "e" inside the stem is often dropped to make it easier to say.

Example with euer:
Euer Hund (Your dog - nominative)
Eure Katze (Your cat - feminine/plural, the 'e' before 'r' is dropped)

5. Practical Usage

Always look at the noun following the possessive to decide the ending:

  • In seiner Wohnung (In his apartment - Dative feminine)
  • Wegen ihrer Arbeit (Because of her work - Genitive feminine)
  • Mit meinen Eltern (With my parents - Dative plural)
