Unusual and Foreign Plurals in German

Most German nouns follow regular plural patterns, but many nouns—especially those borrowed from Latin, Greek, or Italian—retain foreign plural endings or have unique rules. These are more common in formal or academic writing.

1. Nouns Ending in -is, -um, and -us

Many masculine and neuter nouns from Latin and Greek change their endings significantly in the plural. The most common shift for -is and -um is to -en.

  • -um to -en: das Museum – die Museen (the museum – the museums), das Zentrum – die Zentren (the center – the centers), das Album – die Alben (the album – the albums). Note: das Visum usually becomes die Visa.
  • -us endings: These vary. Some take -en, like der Rhythmus – die Rhythmen (the rhythm – the rhythms). Others take -i, like der Terminus – die Termini (the term – the terms). Some have become regular, like der Bus – die Busse (the bus – the buses).
  • Classical exceptions: der Kaktus – die Kakteen (the cactus – the cacti), das Tempus – die Tempora (the tense – the tenses).

2. Nouns Ending in -ma and -a

Nouns of Greek origin ending in -ma typically take -en in the plural, though a very formal -mata ending also exists.

  • -ma to -men: das Thema – die Themen (the topic – the topics), das Drama – die Dramen (the drama – the dramas), die Firma – die Firmen (the company – the companies).
  • -ma to -mata (Formal): das Komma – die Kommata (the comma – the commas), das Schema – die Schemata (the scheme – the schemes).
  • -a to -en: Some feminine nouns ending in -a replace it with -en. die Villa – die Villen (the villa – the villas), die Pizza – die Pizzen (the pizza – the pizzas).

3. Learned and Mixed Plurals

Other foreign or "learned" nouns have unique plurals that often preserve their original stems. In many cases, these exist alongside more "Germanized" versions.

  • das Stadion – die Stadien (the stadium – the stadiums)
  • das Risiko – die Risiken (the risk – the risks)
  • der Atlas – die Atlanten (the atlas – the atlases)
  • das Solo – die Soli (the solo – the solos)

4. Compounds with -mann

When a noun ends in -mann, the plural depends on whether you are referring to a professional group or individuals.

  • -leute: Used for professional groups or mixed-gender groups. der Fachmann – die Fachleute (the expert – the experts/specialists), die Seeleute (the sailors/seafarers).
  • -männer: Used when focusing on specific male individuals. der Schneemann – die Schneemänner (the snowman – the snowmen), die Ehrenmänner (the men of honor).

5. One Singular, Two Plurals

Some nouns have two different plural forms, each with a different meaning. This is a crucial distinction to learn.

  • die Bank: die Bänke (benches) vs. die Banken (banks).
  • das Wort: die Wörter (isolated words, e.g., in a dictionary) vs. die Worte (connected speech or meaningful words).
  • das Band: die Bänder (ribbons/tapes) vs. die Bände (book volumes).
  • der Rat: die Räte (councils) vs. die Ratschläge (pieces of advice).

6. Singular vs. Plural Mismatches

Occasionally, a noun is singular in German but its natural English equivalent is plural. Despite this, these German nouns can still form their own plurals depending on the context.

  • die Schere (scissors - singular in German)
  • die Treppe (stairs - singular in German)
  • die Politik (politics - singular in German)
