Plural Formation of Neuter Nouns in German

Forming the plural of neuter nouns (words starting with das) in German follows several distinct patterns. While it might seem complex at first, these nouns are actually more systematic than masculine ones. Here is a breakdown of the main rules:

1. The "-e" Ending (The Most Common Group)

Roughly 75% of neuter nouns take an -e in the plural. This group includes many nouns with multiple syllables and loanwords. In some cases, an Umlaut is added if the vowel allows it.

  • das Bein – die Beine (the leg – the legs)
  • das Jahr – die Jahre (the year – the years)
  • das Schaf – die Schafe (the sheep – the sheep)
  • das Gefäß – die Gefäße (the vessel – the vessels)
  • das Verbot – die Verbote (the prohibition – the prohibitions)

Special Cases:

  • Nouns ending in -nis double the "s": das Zeugnis – die Zeugnisse (the certificate/report card – the certificates).
  • The word das Knie (the knee) forms the plural as die Knie (the knees) without adding an extra "e" at the end.
  • The word das Floß (the raft) is unique as it forms the plural die Flöße (the rafts) with an Umlaut and "-e".

2. The "-(e)r" Ending (With Umlaut)

About 25% of neuter nouns add -er (or just -r). Most of these are one-syllable words, and they almost always take an Umlaut if the vowel is a, o, or u.

  • das Kind – die Kinder (the child – the children)
  • das Blatt – die Blätter (the leaf – the leaves)
  • das Tal – die Täler (the valley – the valleys)
  • das Dorf – die Dörfer (the village – the villages)

This also applies to all nouns ending in -tum:

  • das Altertum – die Altertümer (the antiquity – the antiquities)

Some multi-syllable words also fall into this category, such as das Gesicht – die Gesichter (the face – the faces) or das Spital – die Spitäler (the hospital – the hospitals).

3. No Ending (Zero Change)

Neuter nouns ending in -el, -en, or -er do not take an additional plural ending. This also applies to diminutives (words ending in -chen or -lein) and nouns starting with the prefix Ge- and ending in -e.

  • das Messer – die Messer (the knife – the knives)
  • das Kissen – die Kissen (the pillow – the pillows)
  • das Mädchen – die Mädchen (the girl – the girls)
  • das Gebäude – die Gebäude (the building – the buildings)

Umlaut-only exceptions: Only two neuter nouns change their plural by adding an Umlaut alone: das Kloster – die Klöster (the monastery – the monasteries) and das Wasser – die Wässer/Wasser (the water – the waters).

4. The "-(e)n" Ending

A small group of neuter nouns adds -n or -en. This includes specific common objects and some scientific terms ending in -on.

  • das Auge – die Augen (the eye – the eyes)
  • das Bett – die Betten (the bed – the beds)
  • das Herz – die Herzen (the heart – the hearts)
  • das Elektron – die Elektronen (the electron – the electrons)
