The German Indefinite Article: ein and kein

In German, the indefinite article ein corresponds to the English "a" or "an." To negate these nouns, German uses a specific "negative article" called kein (no / not a / not any).

1. Forms and Declension

The articles ein and kein change their endings based on the gender of the noun and its case (its role in the sentence). Note that kein follows the exact same pattern as ein, but it also exists in the plural.

  • Masculine: ein / kein (Nominative) β†’ einen / keinen (Accusative) β†’ einem / keinem (Dative) β†’ eines / keines (Genitive)
  • Feminine: eine / keine (Nominative) β†’ eine / keine (Accusative) β†’ einer / keiner (Dative) β†’ einer / keiner (Genitive)
  • Neuter: ein / kein (Nominative) β†’ ein / kein (Accusative) β†’ einem / keinem (Dative) β†’ eines / keines (Genitive)
  • Plural: (None) / keine (Nominative & Accusative) β†’ (None) / keinen (Dative) β†’ (None) / keiner (Genitive)

2. The Plural Rule

Like in English, ein has no plural. If you want to say "I have books," you simply say "Ich habe BΓΌcher." However, kein is used to negate plural nouns where no article was present.

  • Hier gibt es gute Weine. (There are good wines here.)
  • Hier gibt es keine guten Weine. (There are no good wines here.)

3. Spoken Reductions

In spoken German, the indefinite article is often unstressed and shortened. While we write the full form to distinguish it from the number "one" (eins), you will often hear these reductions in casual speech:

  • Ich habe 'n Buch gekauft. (I bought a book.)
  • Ich habe ein Buch gekauft. (I bought one book. β€” Emphasis on the numeral)

4. Usage of the Negative Article kein

You must use kein instead of nicht when negating a noun that has an indefinite article or no article at all. It acts as the direct opposite of ein.

  • Es war ein angenehmer Anblick. (It was a pleasant sight.) β†’ Es war kein angenehmer Anblick. (It was not a pleasant sight.)
  • Kennst du einen Arzt? (Do you know a doctor?) β†’ Kennst du keinen Arzt? (Don't you know a doctor?)
  • Ich habe Geld. (I have money.) β†’ Ich habe kein Geld. (I have no money.)
