usos de 'the'

💡 Regla Gramatical

Usos especiales de “the” (Explicación en español)

1. “The” para cosas que existen solo una vez

Usamos the cuando solo hay una de algo o es único en el contexto.

  • the equator (el ecuador)
  • the capital (la capital)
  • the tenth floor (la décima planta)

2. “The” con superlativos

Siempre usamos the con adjetivos en grado superlativo.

Ejemplo: the longest river (el río más largo).

3. “The” cuando el oyente sabe a qué nos referimos

Usamos the cuando está claro qué cosa específica queremos decir, incluso si es la primera vez que la mencionamos.

  • The sun is a star (El sol es una estrella).
  • The hotel we stayed at was very old (El hotel en el que nos alojamos era muy viejo).

4. Frases fijas con “the”

Algunas expresiones llevan siempre the:

  • the same (lo mismo)
  • the world (el mundo)
  • the universe (el universo)
  • the sky (el cielo)
  • the sea (el mar)
  • the ground (el suelo)

5. “Earth” con o sin “the”

Decimos Earth sin artículo cuando lo usamos como nombre de planeta: Earth is the third planet from the sun (La Tierra es el tercer planeta desde el sol).

Decimos the Earth cuando hablamos de ella como el lugar donde vivimos: People have lived on the Earth for thousands of years (La gente ha vivido en la Tierra durante miles de años).

6. “Space” vs. “the space”

Space sin artículo significa el espacio exterior: They traveled into space (Viajaron al espacio).

The space significa un área concreta: The space in the closet is too small (El espacio en el armario es demasiado pequeño).

7. “The cinema / the theatre”

Usamos the con ciertos lugares públicos de ocio: go to the cinema (ir al cine), go to the theatre (ir al teatro).

8. TV, radio, internet

  • Pero decimos the radio: I listen to the radio (Escucho la radio).
  • Y the internet: I found it on the internet (Lo encontré en internet).

9. Comidas

Normalmente no usamos the antes de comidas: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

10. Números y etiquetas

Normalmente omitimos the antes de etiquetas como:

  • size 43 (talla 43)
  • platform 5 (andén 5)
  • room 126 (habitación 126)
  • page 29 (página 29)
  • vitamin A (vitamina A)
  • section B (sección B)

11. Lugares: school, prison, hospital, etc.

  • go to school / be at school = como estudiante.
  • go to prison / be in prison = como preso.
  • go to hospital / be in hospital = como paciente (más común en inglés británico; en inglés americano se usa más “the hospital”, aunque se entienden ambas formas).
  • go to university / go to college = como estudiante.
  • go to church / be in church = como creyente.

  • go to the school to pick up my child (ir al colegio a recoger a mi hijo)
  • go to the prison to visit someone (ir a la prisión a visitar a alguien)
  • go to the hospital to see a patient (ir al hospital a ver a un paciente)

12. Bed, work, home

  • go to bed / be in bed (para dormir)
  • sit on the bed (el mueble)
  • go to work / be at work / finish work
  • go home / get home / be at home / do something at home

the station (la estación), the cinema (el cine), the library (la biblioteca).
